"Just City – Was ist eine gerechte Stadt?" Mit diesem Thema beschäftigt sich eine internationale Konferenz, die am Center for Metropolitan Studies stattfindet. Internationale Stadtentwicklungsexperten beschäftigen sich mit Fragen zur gerechten Stadt aus europäischer und amerikanischer Perspektive. Wir möchten Sie hiermit herzlich zu der Konferenz einladen. Die Veranstaltung findet in englischer Sprache statt.

Das Center for Metropolitan Studies (CMS) ist ein interdisziplinäres, international orientiertes Forschungszentrum, das sich historischen und gegenwärtigen Fragestellungen zum Thema Metropole widmet. Kern des Centers ist das Transatlantische Graduiertenkolleg Berlin – New York, eine von der Deutschen Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) geförderte Kooperation der drei Berliner Universitäten (TU, HU, FU) sowie der New York University und der Columbia University in New York. Sprecherhochschule ist die TU Berlin. Momentan arbeiten 12 Doktorandinnen und Doktoranden und zwei Post Docs aus sieben verschiedenen Fachdisziplinen und fünf Nationen zu verschiedenen Aspekten der Metropolenforschung.

The Conference “The Just Cityö
The term “Just Cityö has been coined by American political scientists and urban planners to summarize a variety of challenges that architects, planners, and policy makers have to face at the turn of the 21st century: How can cities plan for and contribute to social justice? How can metropolitan areas provide diversity and equality, distinctive cultural practice and social exchange and, difference and integration? Are historical precedents or analogies of any help for the future? The riots in the French banlieue, the (mis)management of the New Orleans disaster, and the debates on immigration and ethnic diversity in Germany and the United States – recent events raise these questions with new urgency. 

For the first portion of the Just City conference, which took place in January 2006, we invited a number of German and American scholars, including Susan Fainstein, Peter Marcuse, John Mollenkopf, Etienne François, Susanne Stemmler, and Boris Gresillon. We plan to publish a summary of the presentations.
